If you've been looking for alternatives to After Effects, or just curious about what else is out there, a couple of applications have emerged that approach animation and compositing from genuinely different angles — and both have free tiers that make them worth trying without any commitment. Neither is open source, but they're free, which is what matters here.
Autograph was recently acquired by Maxon (the Cinema 4D people) and relaunched as a free tool for individual use — full version, no major feature cuts, just requires a free MyMaxon account. It's a hybrid: layer-based compositing with a real 3D engine underneath using Pixar's USD format and the Filament renderer. You're working with actual 3D objects inside the same timeline as your 2D animation, not simulating depth with flat layers.
One of its more distinctive features is responsive design output: set up a project once and export it in multiple aspect ratios — vertical, square, 16:9 — automatically. It also supports data-driven workflows, where you connect a CSV file and generate hundreds of video variations from a single project. That's a genuinely different way of thinking about motion design production.
The modifier-based animation system replaces expressions with stackable visual modifiers, which makes complex animations more approachable to build. If you're used to layer-based compositing, the transition is relatively smooth.
