Working from anywhere was unthinkable some years ago, but now it is increasingly possible to create your VJ footage from any place in the world, thanks to new creative media, gadgets, innovative services, low prices and faster internet.
#1 Select Tools Based on Your Needs
In the first place you will need to find the computer that best fits your needs and budget. If you are going to create VJ loops and footage or work as VJ, you must consider getting a laptop (more expensive) or a desktop (cheaper) with a multi-core processor: 2.5Ghz or above, RAM: 8GB or above, SSD: 128GB or above, GPU: NVIDIA Quadro or AMD FirePro for footage creation, and GeForce GTX for VJing. The iPad Pro, with apps like COLORCODE VJ, TouchVIZ or GoVJ, is an interesting alternative for VJing too. Last but not least, get a good mouse and/or a graphics tablet, one or more HDDs and enclosure cases, and depending on the situation, a laptop backpack or a simple desktop transport case.
Regarding the software, you could get started with some open source and free tools and complement them with SaaS. In the case of VJ footage design you should look for a reliable online render farm too (try it first before spending any money).
#2 Fast Internet Is the Key
Obviously you will need internet in order to download or send footage, so look for an unlocked mobile Wi-Fi hotspot - TP-LINK or Huawei - and a 4G prepaid plan; avoid contracts if possible. You should be able to find plans from 30GB onwards, with prices between €0.50 and €2.00 per gigabyte. Take into account that internet speed and offers are related to the service demand and geography of the region. Cities have the best coverage, unlike rural areas or mountain ranges where the connection sometimes is not perfect; anyway, you can always check out the coverage maps prior to making any decision.
If you are in a big city, you could visit the libraries outside the city center. The new towns and municipalities usually have new libraries with faster internet and fewer visitors.
#3 Don't Visit Your Bank Anymore
Create an online bank account with low fees; try looking for something similar to N26 (Germany). After that, setup your payment gateways: Paypal and/or Stripe are the most popular solutions. By the way, when selling your VJ footage or services, do not forget to keep your records and stay organized with a cloud-based accounting app such as Wave (free), Sage, QuickBooks, FreshBooks, KashFlow, etc.
P.S. Remember to always do some research before moving to a new place.
